5 out of 5 stars Best Reggae Album Ever   January 27, 2008

No Joke. When I first heard this album, I was floored. It was clear that reggae had evolved. Lee Scratch Perry is at his most creative and inventive on all the tracks. The falsetto vocals of the Congos combine with the haunting rhythms and bizarre sounds to produce something that transcends music. Take special care to listen to the tracks "Fisherman", "Can't Come in" and "Children crying". Those tracks will immerse you into Lee Scratch Perry's magical, frightening dream vision of a world inhabited with Biblical images. Don't pass this album up!

5 out of 5 stars Redemption for your Soul   May 8, 2007

Pardon my being repetitive, but it would be a cardinal sin not to share my opinion.
The praise can't be shouted loud enough. Please believe all the hype you have heard about this one!

'Open (your heart) up (to) the gates of Zion', because the genius that is Mr Lee S. Perry is DEFINITELY in full effect here with The Congos, the Upsetters, and his celestial ensemble of back up singers.

Don't do 'The wrong thing'! Build yourself a 'Solid Foundation'. 'Bring the Mackaback', and revel with brother ants inna 'Noah Sugar Pan'.
If the 'Ark of the Covenant' were music, this CD would definitely be it.

Beg, borrow, steal (or preferably) BUY this Album.

Redeem your soul, justify your existence, and lose yourself in the musical, visionary and artistic FEAST that is the 'Heart of the Congos'

The extra disc of mixes/versions is the cherry on top of a pie so sweet that you risk contacting diabetes.

Big up to 'Blood and Fire Limited' for getting this rarity re-released to one & all.

5 out of 5 stars Mystical reggae   March 19, 2007
Each arrangement is enchanting. I've listened to this album when it was first released. Bought the CD recently and am still discovering it's charm, radical arrangement for its time. A must buy release. Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring, transcendental music   December 22, 2006

You have to wonder why this is one of the few albums that virtually without fault every reviewer has given 5 stars to.

When you start listening you will soon know why. Its organic, shimmering grooves are simply beyond compare. It's like nothing you have ever heard, truly awe inspiring, ethereal and deeply spiritual. It's also an album you can keep coming back to and continue to be amazed by.

The trademark Perry echoes and ambience sit perfectly with the Congos dual vocalists, augmented by what at times seems to be a celestial choir sent by the most high. A track like "Solid Foundation" is a classic example of this. It's bass throb and percussion would create a masterpiece by itself, but add to that Cedric Mynton's beautiful falsetto brimming with biblical narratives and a choir driving towards religious ecstasy and then tripping out in a dubby coda and you have something utterly unique and wonderous.

I couldn't tell you what my favourite tracks are as there is always something new to visit and wonder at.

Buy this album. It is a total classic, it sits uniquely within and amongst genres. You will be amazed and inspired.
