5 out of 5 stars In-FREAKING-credible!!!!! A must have for ANYONE!   March 30, 2004
Dear Amazon reader: I'm sure you've seen many albums that receive 5 star averages, but when you look at the individual reviews, there are always those people who give an album 1 or 2 stars for whatever "reasons" (haters abound). Notice, though, that as of this posting, this album has gotten 5 stars from EVERYONE, minus a few 4 star ratings scattered about. That should say it all - 'Heart of the Congos' is divine...like Desmond Dekker said - "beautiful and dangerous".

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest   March 2, 2004

Heart of the Congos, in my mind, is the greatest reggae album ever. The more I've listened to it, the more I'm inclined to call it one of the best albums of all-time, regardless of genre. When I first heard this album, it didn't sound like reggae. Too many people see Bob Marley as all there is to reggae (not to come down on Marley, because I do love his music) and the Congos sound is something very different. Lee Perry produces up a storm on this album. The songs are extremely dense, and new things pop up each time you listen to it. The atmosphere is loaded with African percussion and Lee Perry's trademark, echo-y sound, and really goes a long way to making you feel as if you're Jamaica or Africa (depending on which song you're listening to). If you buy this album, it's likely that you wont think too much of it on your initial listen (most of this is because of it's radical differences from the more Marley-style reggae). Don't let your first impression form your opinion of the album, though, because it truly is an intricately crafted masterpiece. Oh, and by the way, stay away from The Congos later material... it gets some critical acclaim, but it sounds absolutely nothing like their first (and best) album. Lots of 80s style cheese.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch roots courtesy of the Black Ark   September 26, 2003

I have the Heart of the Congos album on vinyl and I have to say it is probably the best album I've ever bought. The Congos have such an original sound and this really is a must have in any roots collection. Despite what others say, the songs don't sound the same at all, they all have the same feeling, they sound godly and spiritual a lot of them, but they certainly don't sound the same. Cedric Myton has a righteous voice and I think it'll be tough to come across another album that tops this one.

Dub it easy,
prince of eloquence

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating music   July 20, 2003

This is absolutely beautiful music. Although the lyrics are very much along the lines of typical spiritual and Rastafarian themes, this is not your typical reggae. The music really centers around the harmonies of the voices, including the extraordinary falsetto of the lead singer. The instrumentation is sparse, and is in fact mainly percussion. You get 2 CDs, but the second one is full of alternate versions and does not add a whole lot to the package. Still, an extraordinary recording,a nd well worth a listen.
