5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Cliff is the best!   April 24, 2004

In response to the "best of the rest" review, Bob Marley is over-rated. Sure, he's a talented musician, but he's certainly not the end all be all of reggae music. In my opinion he's not even the best. He's basically just over-hyped in this country, and sadly many people I talk with can't even name a reggae musician besides Bob Marley. Many great musicians have been over looked, so contemporary popularity certainly isn't too accurate a measure of greatness. This album is great because it features the best songs of the best reggae musicians ever. Despite the diversity of styles on this CD, it all flows together very naturally. And despite what that reviewer said, Jimmy Cliff's lyrics are among the best of all time. They eloquently express raw emotion, hopes and dreams, joy and pain, and a determination to see justice. Part of what makes it such an excellent collection is that it doesn't include anything by Bob Marley, who we've all heard way too much of. Ironically, Mr. Marley would never have been heard of in America had he not been discovered by Jimmy Cliff, who hooked him up with studio time and recording deals. But they say no good deed goes unpunished, and so Cliff had the spotlight stolen from him. Anyone who listens to this CD will see the true magnificence of non-Marley reggae and the shame of all these musicians having been ignored for so long in American popular culture as the genre was reduced to just one musician in so many people's minds.

5 out of 5 stars The Soul of Jamaica   April 22, 2004

Jimmy Cliff put reggae on the map in the USA with this fantastic masterpiece classic soundtrack released in 1973.
A wonderful journey back into the marvelous 1970's. You don't get much better than inspirational soul music like ` You Can Get It If You Really Want' and the beautiful melodious `Many Rivers to Cross' as well as the upbeat and feisty ` The Harder They Come". I once saw an advertisement of wildlife to the tune of `Many Rivers' and it was so poignant and spectacular.
The Slickers add to this zesty album with "Johnny Too Bad"
This is fantastic cross between reggae and calypso, capturing the very, very best essence of Jamaica.

5 out of 5 stars cornerstone reggae album   November 23, 2003

"Cornerstone" is a strange word to describe this cd, since the music is about life in the Jamaican shanty towns where there are shanties instead of stones, but anyways this cd is a quintessential description of that life. The music describes the crime. It describes the yearning for reggae stardom with everyone vying to make it big, sure they can get it if they really want. And the ganja, & the love, ecstacy, deep depression, anger. The music captures the whole spirit so well that it feels great to listen to. One of the best features of the cd is that it has You Can Get It If You Really Want & The Harder They Come twice, because those songs are twice as important as other songs.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, must-have CD   February 21, 2003

The Harder They Come was a classic look into Jamaican politics & Reggae culture during the turbulent '70's. Each song on the soundtrack (like Marley recordings) remains individually spectacular 30 years later. If you don't have this CD, GET IT!
You won't be sorry. (If you never saw the flick, it's well worth a couple bucks and a couple hours)

5 out of 5 stars The Next Step After Bob!   January 31, 2003

This review is for those people whose reggae "collection" consists of Bob Marley's "Legend" (which is certainly a good place to start). Next up for your palette should be this undisputed masterpiece. This was the album that introduced many Americans back in the early 70's to this fantastic music. I've always thought that the greatest thing about reggae is its zest for life, and this soundtrack will simply plant a big 40 minute smile on your face. Of course, Jimmy Cliff gets top billing, and his "Many Rivers to Cross" should be played at everyone's funeral, but the other acts are no less amazing.
