5 out of 5 stars Incredible Reggae CD-Worth paying much more!!!   January 23, 2003

I've always been a hardcore reggae fan, and when i picked this cd off the shelf, i had no idea how good it would be. I was pleasantly surprised, as this cd is one of the best reggae cds i have!!!! Jimmy Cliff of course i knew of, but some of the artists i'd never heard of!!! This cd rivals anything of Bob Marley, who i'm also a hardcore fan of, and listening to it, i was surprised i didn't know some of the artists, as every song has become one of my favorites. This cd is definitely worth the buy and then some!!! (Check out the movie of the same name)

5 out of 5 stars This CD contains more than just Jimmy Cliff   December 17, 2002
For some reason, I thought this CD was going to be purely Jimmy Cliff, whom I've always liked. So I was a bit disappointed when I looked at the CD jacket, and saw these other artist names... names I didn't recognize. Well I gotta say this CD is awesome! I'm no reggae "expert", but to me some of the songs seem to border on "ska". Regardless, there are alot of infectious hooks on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Reggae at its finest. - great for newbies.   November 3, 2002

Talking with someone the other day, they said, "some reggae is ok, but a lot of it gives me a headache."

My prescription was this cd, an absolute classic and a great, easy-on-the-ears introduction to reggae. You just can't go wrong with this. As a matter of fact, I would say that this should be your first reggae cd in your collection, followed thereafter with the more ubiquitous and completely worthy "Legend" from Marley.

Lots of other song by song reviews here at Amazon. Just wanted to offer my highest recommendation for this - especially for those a bit leery of reggae. I would find it hard to believe that anyone you know, after a listen or two to this, would not come around to enjoy this. Then they too can say, "I like reggae! - Some of it anyway."

I'm one of those relatively few people who prefer Jimmy Cliff to Bob Marley...and this CD is one of the primary reasons. I'm not a huge reggae fan, but this soundtrack is simply one of the best CDs I've ever heard. Every song is a classic. Four of Jimmy's best songs are one this one - "You Can Get It," "Many Rivers to Cross," "Sitting in Limbo," and "The Harder They Come." Even non-reggae fans are likely to recognize "Many Rivers to Cross," which I think is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.

In addition to Jimmy's incredible contributions, several other important reggae acts make an appearance. Scotty scores with "Draw Your Brakes," which has the memorable chorus "stop that train, I want to get off." Desmond Dekker (who had the first ever US reggae hit single with "Israelites") has a song as does the Slickers ("Johnny Too Bad," which was later covered by UB40). This CD is widely credited with popularizing reggae in the United States, and for that distinction alone, it deserves to be considered a true classic. Plus, it's just great music.
