3 out of 5 stars good music, poor sound   September 2, 2008
What a smile-in-a-box this CD is! You can hardly help tapping your feet or bopping your head as you listen to it. I've been a fan of Toots for years, along with other reggae of that era; this CD was replacing a couple of older albums. I was expecting more from the CD. Unfortunately, I must have gotten a lemon. The sound is a little muffled, the mid-range is muddy, the highs seem compressed or clipped, and the bass is indistinct. Sounds similar in my car, and on my Klipsch (horn-tweeter) computer speakers, and on my Paradigm Monitor 7's on the "real" stereo. And the Klipsch & the Paradigm are noted for teh "brightness" of their sound! It's as if it was recorded from behind the drum set, with the monitors facing away from the microphone. Sounds like a bad bootleg copy. The mp3 preview clip on the Amazon web site is brighter & more forward-sounding than the actual CD! I may return it & try for a replacement.

Anyway, Toots & the Maytals get a 5-star rating, as does the selection of included tracks - top notch stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD, good price!   May 12, 2005
In case you don't already know it, Toots and the Maytals are one of the best bands in the world - the kings of feelgood, upbeat reggae music. Their concerts are spiritual experiences and much of their recorded output is some of the most soulful and listenable music you'll ever hear. If you're new to Toot's music, this CD is a good place to begin. It has most of the essential Toot's songs (greatest hits). If you are a hardcore fan like me, it leaves you wanting a little more. I feel this disc would be nearly perfect if "Dreams To Remember" was left off and "Never You Change" and "True Love Is Hard To Find" were included. Aside from the early classics, the producers of this disc had the good taste to include "Freedom Train" from the "Toots In Memphis" album. Toot's version of this tune is so powerful and well-recorded. I definitely recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys cookin', soulful music.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Album   June 17, 2004

Before I bought this album, I hardly knew anything about reggae music. I heard the song "Funky Kingston" performed on Saturday Night Live with Toots (and the Maytals), Roots, and Boots(as in Bootsy Collins). I wanted to know more about these guys, Toots and the Maytals.

When I popped this disc in my player, I immediately knew it was different from anything in my collection. I typically listen to artists like U2, R.E.M., and Coldplay. But this album is so funky, so lively, and so much fun. My favorites are the first two tracks, the aforementioned "Funky Kingston" and the reggae cover of John Denver, "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Get this album and open yourself up to another world of music.

5 out of 5 stars The Joy of Reggae Music   December 9, 2003
When listening to this C.D., you can just sense the great joy and fun they had recording it. It is the kind of C.D. you can't help but feel happy and wanna get up and dance. Especially with great tracks like the remake of John denver's country road. (my personal favorite) I am also partial to Pomp and Pride. Anyone who likes Reggae/ska will probably love this c.d. Toots and the Maytails were a very important part in early Reggae music in the 60's and 70's It is also a great starter disc for people who have interest in reggae music. It is truely a classic that stands alone
